Proto-pasta, the Exotic Filament specialists, has created a PLA filament filled with fine stainless steel powder to add heft to printed objects. When polished smooth, the stainless steel creates a very convincing metal look and feel. At CES 2015, we saw the Terminator head (http://www.thingiverse.com/make:111269) printed with the stainless steel filament, and it was just amazing to see and to hold!
The stainless steel filament has a density of 2.4 g/cm^3. For applications that require higher densities, please check out our GMASS filament offering.
IMPORTANT USAGE NOTES
The iron filler used to produce the stainless steel filament is abrasive and will lead to a much faster wear of printer components that come in contact with the filament (specifically, the extruder, the hot end, and the nozzle). We offer high-lubricity nozzle upgrades with a hard coating that last much longer than regular brass nozzles when printing abrasive filament.
