Proto-Pasta Magnetic Iron PLA

Proto-pasta, the Exotic Filament specialists, infused Natureworks 4043D PLA with finely ground iron powder to create this magnetic-iron PLA filament. Due to its high iron content, objects made with this filament behave magnetically similarly to regular iron, making them useful for creating magnetic mechanisms (like latches), and for use with inductive sensors for position sensing.
This filament is ferromagnetic, not magnetic. This means that you can stick a magnet to your finished print, but it itself is not a magnet. It may be possible magnetize your print after it is completed but we make no guarantees in this regard.
Another interesting application for the iron: rust. After exposure to corrosive agents (salt water), the iron will oxidize and rust. This may be useful for creating aging effects for model making and steam-punk artwork.
If you are interested in rusting a print made with Proto-Pasta Magnetic Iron PLA you should start by rubbing the surface of your print lightly with a wire brush, which will expose more of the iron particles. The put your printed object into a salty solution for 2-3 days (or longer!)
Density:
1.8 g/cm3 (1800 kg/m3)
Parameters:
Bed Temp (if available, is not required): 50° C
Hot End Temp: 185– 195° C
Proto-pasta Magnetic Iron PLA prints at similar temperatures as standard PLA, though we have found it seems to like it about 10 degrees cooler than what we usually print PLA at. Quick cooling seems to increase the tendency to warp, so you might try turning your fan off and slowing your printer down a bit. Experiment and see what work best with your machine.
IMPORTANT USAGE NOTES
The iron filler used to produce the magnetic iron filament is abrasive and will lead to a much faster wear of printer components that come in contact with the filament (specifically, the extruder, the hot end, and the nozzle). We offer high-lubricity nozzle upgrades with a hard coating that last much longer than regular brass nozzles when printing abrasive filament.
This filament is brittle while in filament form and should be handled carefully to avoid breakage.
Offered in 125 gram coil only. If you would like purchase this filament in 500g or 2kg spools please Contact Us and we will be happy to get it for you.
