3D Systems announces a hand-held 3D scanner - the Sense

It's powered by PrimeSense, which also supplies the 3D detector technology for the Kinect.   My guess is that it performs similarly to other Kinect-based 3D scanning solutions, but in an easy self-contained package.

From their FAQ:

  • The Sense has automated settings for optimized scanning of small objects (<18 inches), medium objects like a portrait or bust (<32 inches) and large objects like a full body or scene (<6 feet).
  • The Sense uses a Class I laser from PrimeSense technology. It is eye-safe.
  • The Sense scanner outputs an STL or a PLY file that lets you print scans on other 3D printers.

According to the PrimeSense blog, this scanner uses the Carmine 1.09 3D sensor, and is capable of sub-millimeter scanning accuracy.   It is already available for ordering at the Cubify website.
